Research: Unlocking the Science Behind Conservation

A core goal of this program is to support and amplify vital research from conservation partners and scientists working to understand pollinator declines and discover the most effective strategies for restoring native prairie habitat. What you’ll find here is just a sampling of the important research happening across the state that’s guiding real-world conservation efforts.

Examples of Key Science Initiatives:

Darwin’s Bee Dogs are highly specialized conservation K9s that are helping us protect and learn more about our increasingly threatened pollinator species. Here in Texas, the dogs are working with researchers to detect the nests of a bumblebee in decline, the American bumblebee, and potentially the rarer variable cuckoo bumblebee, which also uses these nests. TPWF is proud to fund this critical research in collaboration with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and bee experts across the state. This project will help determine the population status of several pollinator species of greatest conservation need in Texas to inform conservation planning efforts.

The 2023 Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) State Wildlife Action Plan identifies Species of Greatest Conservation Need, including pollinators. TPWD’s research provides a baseline for conservation planning and helps scientists understand the current gaps in native pollinator conservation.

TPWD’s Wildlife Diversity Program conducts essential entomology studies to protect pollinators and their habitats.

Engaging Texans in hands-on conservation:

  • TPWD BioBlitz Citizen Science Program – A statewide initiative to document biodiversity.
  • Texas Nature Trackers – Mobilizing volunteers to monitor wildlife populations.
  • iNaturalist – Social platform where people can share their nature observations to help collect data on biodiversity. Participate in our Texas Pollinators & Prairies Project here.
